The Humidex systems, whether the original analog version or the new digital system, have been proven to help reduce the concentration of radon gas in the air in both the basement and the upstairs of homes.
ClairiTech Innovations Inc, manufacturer of the Humidex systems, and the Université de Moncton conducted tests in two homes for radon gas concentration. Initial testing for radon levels was done in both houses before installation of the Humidex systems. Other readings of radon levels were taken in four different test points within both houses over a 5-month period.
Accustar Canada, a company specialised in radon testing, received the test kits and analyzed them in their certified testing laboratory. After a 5-month period (August 2015 to December 2015) both homes showed a significant reduction in the radon concentration.
What is radon gas?
Radon is a radioactive gas naturally produced when the uranium in soil and rock breaks down. It is invisible, odorless and tasteless which makes it impossible for homeowners to identify without professional testing.
When radon is released in enclosed spaces, like homes, it can sometimes accumulate to high levels, which can be a risk to the health for you and your family. Since radon is a heavy gas, its concentration tends to be in lowest point of the dwelling; the basement or crawlspace. However, if concentrations are high, it will make its presence throughout the entire home.
Guidelines for radon in the United States and in Canada
Health Canada has placed a guideline that a home must not exceed an average annual radon concentration of 200 Bq/m3 (5.4 pCi/L) in the normal occupancy area.
In the United-States, the EPA states that actions must be taken for if the annual average radon concentration in a regularly used room is above 150 Bq/m3 (4 pCi/L). The Humidex systems bring radon level close to what EPA prescribes.
